František Kupka was a Czech-French painter and graphic artist who is considered one of the pioneers of abstract painting. He was born on September 23, 1871 in Opočno, Bohemia. Kupka began his education in 1887 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and continued it at the Academy in Vienna from 1891 to 1893. He was early inclined towards Art Nouveau and Symbolism and lived in Paris from 1895. There he developed further artistically, dealt intensively with music, philosophy and natural sciences and from around 1910 began to increasingly create purely abstract works. His early paintings combine symbolist motifs with an abstract formal language, which later transitioned into purely geometric and colorfully expressive works. Kupka was a close contemporary of artists such as Marcel Duchamp and a member of the Puteaux group. His works are milestones in the development of modern art and are among the most important examples of abstract painting. Kupka died on June 24, 1957 in Puteaux near Paris. Further artists and styles: Hilma af Klint, Wassily Kandinsky, abstraction, Robert Delaunay, Fernand Léger, Marcel Duchamp, Orphism, Raymond Duchamp-Villon, Albert Gleizes, Jean Metzinger, Francis Picabia, Jacques Villon, Cubism, Roger de la Fresnaye, Louis Marcoussis, Henri Le Fauconnier, Piet Mondrian, Giacomo Balla, Umberto Boccioni, Futurism
