German photographer Adolf Fassbender, born in a small town near Cologne, initially assisted a photographer in Freiburg, and subsequently worked as a an artist painter in Dresden, Vienna and Antwerp. In 1911, he immigrated to the United States where he opened his own photography studio in 1921 in New York. During the mid-1920s he began to focus on pictorialism followed by solo exhibitions at the Camera Club of New York in 1934. He was a founding member of the Photograhoc Society of America.
This photogravure is from Fassbender‘s work ”Pictorial Artistry”, the most lavish publication of pictorial photography produced after World War I. It contains 40 hand-pulled gravures in an edition of 1000 numbered copies. Further artists and styles: Pictorialism, Fine Art Printing, bromoil prints, gum prints, Heinrich Kühn, Puyo, Alfred Stieglitz, Leonard Misonne, Rudolf Sulke
