Luigi Ferdinando Marsigli [1658-1730] Italian military engineer and cartographer. This is his most significant work in 6 volumes. It was first published in 1726 in Latin, this is the French edition. Marsigli's monumental work is the first detailed scientific study of the Danube from geographical, hydrographical, astronomical and biological aspects. The 6 royal-folio size volumes contain altogether 6 copperplate cover pictures, 6 cover vignettes, 284 copperplates (2 folding, 34 double-page) and 94 inset copperplates. The first volume describes the geography, astronomy and hydrography of the river (with 20 maps). The second volume discusses the ancient Roman artefacts along the Danube. The third volume deals with mineralogy and mining; the fourth is about the fish, crabs and mussels living in the river. The fifth volume is a detailed description of the birds living and nesting along the Danube illustrated with beautiful copperplates. The sixth volume (Miscellanea) sums up Marsigli's shorter studies relating to the Danube. The six volumes are bound in decorative, ribbed spine, ornately gilt leather, with painted page edges. Minor damages on the spine, but altogether a beautiful, complete copy. Very rare.
