Mindkét mű a jezsuiták és piaristák között zajlott híres vita egy-egy darabja. A polémia kezdetben a piarista Desericzky Ince és Pray György között robbant ki a magyarok származásáról illetve forráskritikai kérdésekről. Desericzky halála után a rendtárs Cetto Benedek rendbe szedte a hagyatékot és 1768-ban saját észrevételeivel kiadta. Erre válaszolt Pray az „Epistola responsoria”-ban.
